Feb 11, 2010 never seem to feel full. please help

by susan

Hello. I dont know if I have binge eating disorder really, but I have always had problems controlling my weight since I had an accident and had to stop playing football when I was young. But now, I dont ever seem to feel full up! I have been able to diet but the weight always goes back on, and then some more. But I feel like I could eat and eat and still not feel full which makes things so much harder. But I dont feel I have a 'disorder'. I dont throw up or anything like that, and I dont feel out of control or have huge cravings. I just never feel like Ive had enough, and so even when Ive finished a meal, I just want more. If Im honest I would have to admit that I love eating. Sometimes it seems its the only pleasure I have. Perhaps I really am just greedy!

Hello Susan. You're right, just because a persons eating habits are not as they should be, it does not necessarily mean they have a disorder!
In your case, I would suggest two things may be playing a part:
It sounds like you have got 'out of touch' with your body's natural hunger and satisfaction signals. If our eating styles have been 'disordered' for a long time, it can mean that we have not been paying attention to when we are hungry or when we are satisfied, and over time, we can become 'de-tuned' to what our body is trying to tell us.
Have a look at: http://www.coping-with-binge-eating.com/emotional-hunger.html

to find out more, and to learn ways to get back in touch with your natural hunger signals.

Secondly, there is the possibility that you are eating in response to emotional or other needs rather than physical hunger. You suggest this when you say "Sometimes it seems its the only pleasure I have". Pleasure is such an important part of life, so start to build in other pleasurable activities into your life on a regular basis. And please read our other pages on emotional eating here: http://www.coping-with-binge-eating.com/emotional-eating.html

I hope that all helps
