Binge Eating Disorder So what qualifies me to write this website?

Hello, my name is Matt and I have written this website about Binge Eating Disorder to give you the information you need on how to stop binge eating for good.

After working for many years as a qualified nurse, I went on to work in one-to-one health promotion as a Health Improvement Manager under the NHS in London.

Many of the clients I saw were coming to me for help with losing weight (others for stop smoking advice, issues around alcohol, or problems with stress). Many told stories of compulsive eating and of having been on and off various diets for years. They talked about their feelings of low self-esteem, of anxiety or depression, of 'emotional eating', and how it had all taken control of their lives for years.

It quickly became apparent that for many, losing weight was not their real problem at all.

I could have talked to them for as long as I liked about exercise and watching their portion sizes - they had tried it all and heard it all so many times before - but that wasn't the point! As more clients talked about their eating patterns, and of the feelings and behaviours they were finding so disruptive, it became clear that many were suffering from binge eating disorder problems - of various kinds.

I took more training, and gained qualifications in:

  • Counselling Skills,
  • Eating Disorder Treatment Skills,
  • Nutritional Interventions,
  • Solution Focused Counselling
  • Motivational Interviewing.

I wanted to find out as much as I could to be able to help my clients better.

We had clear treatment pathways for over weight and obese clients, and for those with mental health problems like depression and anxiety. Even if we saw a client who was suffering from anorexia we could refer on to those who could help - but for our binge eating clients (of either normal weight or over-weight but who had some sort of compulsive eating problem) - somehow they seemed to fall in-between the services we could offer. The community dieticians didn't specialise in the field, and many clients had already experienced counselling regarding their feelings of low self-esteem or anxiety - but somehow neither option totally met their needs.

It also became clear what a secretive problem this could be - many had successfully kept their compulsive eating hidden from their children or their partners, and even their doctor. Many believed that they must be the only one who felt the way they felt, and yet, current research shows that perhaps around 25% of overweight and obese people might be suffering from some form of binge eating disorder!

So they - and you if you suffer similarly - are very far from being on your own!

And so - here is my website! I hope it answers some of your questions about the problems you may be experiencing - and if not fully, then I hope that through our links and contacts you may find your way to someone who can!

The website is designed to give you all the basic information you need, you can make sense of the way you are feeling. How your

  • eating patterns,
  • nutrition,
  • behaviours
  • emotions

are all interlinked. How once you understand what is going on, it can actually make sense! And then with that knowledge, you will learn how you can stop binge eating and compulsive eating, hopefully for good, claim your life back, and move on!

It might not be easy, and it might not be quick, but by taking things one-step at a time you will surely get there.

I don't usually like clichés, but as the saying goes "every journey starts with the first step", and by visiting this site all about Binge Eating disorder you have just taken your very first step! Welcome, and Good Luck.
